Olaplex – What Is It?

Dubbed the new miracle product and used by the likes of Kim Kardashian and her fellow A-lister pals, Olaplex is THE hottest thing in the hair industry right now. But what exactly is it and why is it so damn popular? Read on as we uncover the hype behind the hair product.

The basics

When it comes to all natural solutions, Olapex does Mother Nature proud. It’s free of silicone, sulfates, phthalates, DEA, aldehydes, gluten and involves zero animal testing. Olaplex is the name of a single active ingredient that works wonders on damaged hair. The compound called bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate, a bit of a mouthful, we know!

What does it do?

So what’s all the fuss about? Olaplex actively reconnects broken disulfide sulfur bonds in the hair. Breakage generally occurs during thermal, mechanical and chemical processes. This means that for gals who put their hair through hell, Olaplex is a godsend.

The regular use of Olaplex allows ladies to hit the reset button on their tresses. An ongoing strategy actively rebuilds strength, structure and integrity to create beautiful tresses that are super strong. Once repaired, hair is then capable of withstanding chemical services once again.

The technology is compatible with all hair types, from untreated virgin locks to seriously damaged, chemically treated hair.

How does it work?

To repair hair follicles, a pair of bis-aminopropyl diglycol dimaleate ends form bonds with sulfurs to create an artificial, extended disulfide bridge. These bridges then react with an SH group to form covalent bonds that create luscious locks.

How to apply?

The great thing about Olaplex is that’s it’s available in a variety of forms which makes it highly flexible. It can be mixed in with colouring products to minimise application damage, or used as an entirely separate treatment.

Who developed it?

Olaplex was developed by Dr. Eric Pressly and Dr. Craig Hawker. Pressly has a PHD in materials while Hawker has a PHD in Chemistry. The product is their first foray in the beauty industry and has been an instant hit. The pair have already filed several worldwide patents and have a number of exciting new developments in the works.
