Protecting Hair From The Cold Weather

Cold weather is on its way ladies, and while this does mean the time is ripe for a winter coat splurge or two, it also means that tresses will need a little extra attention. Britain is notorious for its chilly winters so to help you survive the freeze we’ve put together a guide to protecting your locks from damage during cold spells and seasonal snaps.

Rug up your hairstyles

In the same way that you rug up your body to ward off the chilly temperatures, you can also give your hair the same treatment. When you wear your hair out on a daily basis it exposes it to chill which will only serve to dry it out faster. Instead, consider winter the perfect excuse to experiment with braids, twists, buns, knots and our favourite this season, the on-trend head turban. Also wear woolly accessories such as hats and ear muffs to protect hair from the wind.

Nourish your body

You are what you eat, and this concept extends to your locks! In winter it’s essential to nourish your body with foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals. This will stimulate healthy growth and shiny tresses. We’re talking salmon for shine, eggs for growth, avocados for gloss, spinach to battle brittleness, sweet potatoes to fight dullness and cinnamon to boost circulation and channel oxygen and nutrients to hair follicles. Hydration is also essential so don’t forget your eight glasses of water (or herbal tea!) a day.

Treat your locks to TLC

While in summer you can get away with a specialist treatment every now and then, in winter it’s important to give your locks a little extra TLC. If you’ve got human hair extensions winter TLC is an essential part of preventing breakage, reducing friction and minimising frizz. Clarifying shampoos, deep conditioners, glossing serums and maintenance sprays should all be a part of your daily tool box!

Seal your ends

After washing and styling be sure to coat your ends with sealing products designed to lock in moisture, guard against the harsh winter chill and create a barrier between your locks and the elements. While heat sensitive oils like shea butter and coconut oil are great in summer, winter calls for permanent liquids such as olive, almond and jojoba.

Winter may be coming but with the right approach, you can ensure that your locks stay looking lovely no matter what the weather! For expert tips and advice on how to care for extensions in harsh winter weather, the Hair Development team are all too happy to help.
